The delicate colour is a true hallmark of the variety. This wine is packed full of character, the appealing aroma goes way beyond the traditional elderflower and honeysuckle notes that are common to Bacchus. Added to these are enticing riper aromas of peach and pear that are rarely found in English wines. On the palate there is more substance and weight than many English whites, yet the finish is absolutely true to the grape, with fresh apple and melon flavours lingering. As always this is a wine that can be thoroughly enjoyed on its own, but the 2017 seems more of a serious food wine, whether it be summery salads, local asparagus (when the season comes around again next year), pan-fried whitefish or a plate of Mersea oysters. It pairs nicely with a mixed barbecue selection as we think the fresher, slightly more herbal nature of white wines like this work better than many reds.
“Star bright in colour. On the nose a mixture of grapefruit, elderflower and even cucumber leading on to an explosion of crisp fresh fruit and balanced acidity on the palate. A gorgeous expression of Bacchus, putting it alongside Sauvignon as a noble variety. What is particularly special for such a delicious wine is that it carries no more than 11 degrees of alcohol.”
